Evergreen Sumac (Rhus virens) is an outstanding evergreen Texas shrub in the Anacardiaceae (Sumac Family). Typically reaching 8 ft. in height with a spread of 6 ft., it is native across the Chihuahuan Deserts, Cross Timbers, and Edwards Plateau. Its dense, persistent foliage provides year-round thermal cover, privacy screening, and evergreen architectural structure. During summer and fall, the plant produces white flower clusters. Flowering is followed by orange-red. 1/4 inch that add vibrant visual contrast and seasonal interest. When soaked in water, the berries make a tart, tasty tea that is high in vitamin C. Birds and other animals feed on the fuzzy red fruit. The flower is a nectar source for adult butterflies. Thriving in dry, limestone, rocky, and well drained, Evergreen Sumac demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and adapts seamlessly to drought conditions. It features moderate deer resistance.
