Agarita

A resilient evergreen native Texas shrub that provides year-round foliage and structure to the landscape. Native across the Central Great Plains, Chihuahuan Deserts, Cross Timbers, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, High Plains, Southern Texas Plains, and Southwestern Tablelands, Agarita (Berberis trifoliolata) thrives in local conditions while supporting the surrounding ecosystem. Its dense, persistent foliage provides year-round thermal cover, privacy screening, and evergreen architectural structure. During spring, the plant produces yellow flower clusters. The species provides essential habitat and food, supporting Bees, Birds, Butterflies, Nectar Insects, and Small Mammals. Thriving in caliche, clay, dry, limestone, loam, and well drained, Agarita demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and adapts seamlessly to drought conditions.
