Agarita

A standout species for Texas gardens, Agarita (Berberis trifoliolata) is a evergreen shrub native across the Central Great Plains, Chihuahuan Deserts, Cross Timbers, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, High Plains, Southern Texas Plains, and Southwestern Tablelands. Its persistent foliage provides year-round green structure and shelter for local garden wildlife. During Spring, the plant produces yellow blooms. It provides essential nectar, shelter, or forage for native wildlife, including Bees, Birds, Butterflies, Nectar Insects, and Small Mammals. Thriving in caliche, clay, dry, limestone, loam, and well drained, Agarita demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease.
