Crossvine

A standout species for Texas gardens, Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata) is a semi-evergreen vine native across the East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain. Leaves compound, bifoliolate. Dark green, with purplish venation and stems in winter. During Spring, the plant produces red, yellow blooms. Flowering is followed by ornamental brown, flat pod-like capsules, 4 to 8 inches long that add seasonal interest. Hummingbirds are attracted to flowers. An early nectar source for butterflies and hummingbirds. Deer browse it in winter. Best suited to clay, dry, limestone, loam, moist, sand, and well drained, Crossvine adapts seamlessly to local soil conditions. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers no deer resistance.
