Black Dalea

A vital larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies including Dogface Butterfly, Black Dalea (Dalea frutescens) is a semi-evergreen Texas shrub native across the Central Great Plains, Chihuahuan Deserts, Cross Timbers, Edwards Plateau, Southern Texas Plains, and Southwestern Tablelands. During Summer and Fall, the plant produces purple blooms. Flowering is followed by ornamental legume that add seasonal interest. It plays a key ecological role as a larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies, including Dogface Butterfly. Rabbits and deer will browse on this plant. Best suited to dry, gravelly, and limestone, Black Dalea adapts seamlessly to local soil conditions. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers minimal deer resistance.
