Sideoats Grama

A vital larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies including Grass-Skippers, Satyrs, Green Skipper Butterfly, and Dotted Skipper Butterfly, Sideoats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) is a deciduous Texas native grass native across the Central Great Plains, Chihuahuan Deserts, Cross Timbers, East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, High Plains, Southern Texas Plains, Southwestern Tablelands, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain. Green, Blue-green, sometimes turning purple or red in fall. During Summer and Fall, the plant produces orange, red, yellow blooms. After blooming, it produces tan, ivory. It plays a key ecological role as a larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies, including Grass-Skippers, Satyrs, Green Skipper Butterfly, and Dotted Skipper Butterfly. Provides bird food, nesting material, and cover, as well as graze for mammals. Thriving in clay, dry, limestone, loam, moist, sand, and well drained, Sideoats Grama demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers high deer resistance.
