Native across the Central Great Plains, Chihuahuan Deserts, Cross Timbers, East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, High Plains, Southern Texas Plains, Southwestern Tablelands, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain, Winecup (Callirhoe involucrata) is an adaptable semi-evergreen perennial valued for both ornamental appeal and ecosystem support. It features distinctive gray-green foliage. During Spring, Summer, and Fall, the plant produces pink, purple, white blooms. Flowering is followed by ornamental schizocarp that add seasonal interest. It plays a key ecological role as a larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies, including Gray Hairstreak. Best suited to calcareous, clay, dry, gravelly, loam, moist, sand, and well drained, Winecup adapts seamlessly to local soil conditions. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers minimal deer resistance.
