Cedar Sage

Native across the Chihuahuan Deserts and Edwards Plateau, Cedar Sage (Salvia roemeriana) is an adaptable semi-evergreen perennial valued for both ornamental appeal and ecosystem support. During Spring and Summer, the plant produces red blooms. Flowering is followed by ornamental though technically incorrect, the seed cones are often referred to as berries that add seasonal interest. It plays a key ecological role as a larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies, including Painted Lady and Olive Butterfly. Ashe juniper "berries" are highly palatable to many species of birds and small mammals. Best suited to calcareous, dry, limestone, rocky, sand, and well drained, Cedar Sage adapts seamlessly to local soil conditions. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers minimal deer resistance.
