A standout species for Texas gardens, Roughleaf Dogwood (Cornus drummondii) is a deciduous tree native across the Cross Timbers, East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain. It features distinctive green foliage.
During Spring and Summer, the plant produces white blooms. Flowering is followed by ornamental drupe that add seasonal interest.
It plays a key ecological role as a larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies, including Spring Azure.
Thriving in clay, dry, limestone, loam, moist, and sand, Roughleaf Dogwood demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers no deer resistance.
