Esperanza

Esperanza (Tecoma stans var. angustata), also known as Yellow Bells, is an iconic native Texas shrub in the Bignoniaceae (Trumpet Creeper Family). Reaching 4 to 8 ft. in height, it produces dazzling, trumpet-shaped golden-yellow flower clusters from spring all the way through first frost. In addition to attracting hummingbirds and native bees with high-volume nectar, Esperanza serves a vital ecological role as the primary Central Texas larval host plant for the Southern Dogface Butterfly (Zerene cesonia) and the Plebeian Sphinx Moth. Caterpillar larvae feed exclusively on its foliage before emerging as vibrant adult butterflies. Thriving in dry limestone, loam, and well-drained soils, Esperanza demonstrates exceptional heat and drought hardiness once established, making it a cornerstone specimen for Texas native and pollinator gardens.
