A vital larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies including Dusky-blue Groundstreak, Evergreen Sumac (Rhus virens) is a evergreen Texas shrub native across the Chihuahuan Deserts, Cross Timbers, and Edwards Plateau. Its persistent foliage provides year-round green structure and shelter for local garden wildlife.
During Summer and Fall, the plant produces white blooms. After blooming, it produces orange-red. 1/4 inch. When soaked in water, the berries make a tart, tasty tea that is high in vitamin C.
It plays a key ecological role as a larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies, including Dusky-blue Groundstreak. Birds and other animals feed on the fuzzy red fruit. The flower is a nectar source for adult butterflies.
Best suited to dry, limestone, rocky, and well drained, Evergreen Sumac adapts seamlessly to local soil conditions. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers moderate deer resistance.
