Frostweed

A vital larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies including Bordered Patch and Silvery Checkerspot, Frostweed (Verbesina virginica) is a deciduous Texas perennial native across the East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain. During Fall, the plant produces white blooms. Flowering is followed by ornamental capsule that add seasonal interest. It plays a key ecological role as a larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies, including Bordered Patch and Silvery Checkerspot. It provides essential nectar, shelter, or forage for native wildlife, including Bees and Butterflies. Best suited to calcareous, dry, loam, moist, and well drained, Frostweed adapts seamlessly to local soil conditions. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease.
