Little Bluestem

Celebrated for its regional ecological value, Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a deciduous Texas native grass native across the Central Great Plains, Chihuahuan Deserts, Cross Timbers, East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, High Plains, Southern Texas Plains, Southwestern Tablelands, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain. It features distinctive green or blue-green. russet in winter foliage. During Summer and Fall, the plant produces brown, green, white blooms. Flowering is followed by ornamental caryopsis that add seasonal interest. It serves as a larval host plant for Delaware Skipper, Dusted Skipper. Provides cover for at least 24 species of songbirds and nesting sites or seeds for Grasshopper Sparrow, Henslow Sparrow, and other sparrows, as well as nesting sites for Sedge Wrens and Western Meadowlarks. Thriving in clay, dry, limestone, rocky, sand, and well drained, Little Bluestem demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers high deer resistance.
