Gulf Muhly

Muhlenbergia capillaris

FAMILY: Poaceae (Grass Family)

A resilient native native Texas grass & sedge that provides year-round foliage and structure to the landscape. Native across the East Central Texas Plains, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain, Gulf Muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris) thrives in local conditions while supporting the surrounding ecosystem. Distinguished by dark foliage that is yellow-green, it offers an exceptional visual and tactile texture. During fall, the plant produces pink, purple flower clusters. Flowering gives way to ornamental caryopsiss that ripen through summer and autumn. The species provides essential habitat and food, supporting Birds, Butterflies, and Small Mammals. Thriving in calcareous, clay, rocky, sand, and well drained, Gulf Muhly demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and adapts seamlessly to drought conditions. It features high deer resistance.
