Gulf Coast Penstemon

Penstemon tenuis

FAMILY: Plantaginaceae (Plantain Family)

A resilient native native Texas herbaceous that provides year-round foliage and structure to the landscape. Native across the Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Gulf Coast Penstemon (Penstemon tenuis) thrives in local conditions while supporting the surrounding ecosystem. Distinguished by dark foliage that is glaucous green, it offers an exceptional visual and tactile texture. During spring, the plant produces purple flower clusters. Flowering is followed by green to dark grey 13-18 mm follicles, 2 mm seeds that add vibrant visual contrast and seasonal interest. It plays a vital ecological role as a larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies, including Common Buckeye. Attracts butterflies and bumblebees. Thriving in clay, loam, moist, poor drainage, and sand, Gulf Coast Penstemon demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and adapts seamlessly to drought conditions.
