Mealy Blue Sage

A vital larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies including Painted Lady, Mealy Blue Sage (Salvia farinacea) is a semi-evergreen Texas perennial native across the Central Great Plains, Chihuahuan Deserts, Cross Timbers, East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Southern Texas Plains, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain. During Spring, Summer, and Fall, the plant produces delightfully fragrant, blue blooms. Flowering is followed by ornamental nutlets that add seasonal interest. It plays a key ecological role as a larval host plant for Central Texas butterflies, including Painted Lady. Thriving in clay, limestone, loam, sand, and well drained, Mealy Blue Sage demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers high deer resistance.
