Turk's Cap

Malvaviscus arboreus

FAMILY: Malvaceae (Mallow Family)

A resilient native native Texas shrub that provides year-round foliage and structure to the landscape. Native across the East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain, Turk's Cap (Malvaviscus arboreus) thrives in local conditions while supporting the surrounding ecosystem. During summer and fall, the plant produces red flower clusters. Flowering is followed by schizocarpic berries that add vibrant visual contrast and seasonal interest. The species provides essential habitat and food, supporting Birds, Butterflies, Hummingbirds, Moths, and Small Mammals. Thriving in clay, dry, limestone, moist, sand, and well drained, Turk's Cap demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and adapts seamlessly to drought conditions. It features moderate deer resistance.
