Huisache (Vachellia farnesiana) is an outstanding native Texas tree in the Fabaceae (Pea Family). Typically reaching 15 ft. in height with a spread of 15 ft., it is native across the Chihuahuan Deserts, East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Southern Texas Plains, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain. Distinguished by dark foliage that is green to gray-green, it offers an exceptional visual and tactile texture. During spring, the plant produces delightfully fragrant, orange, yellow flower clusters. Flowering is followed by green, brown, black 3-8 cm that add vibrant visual contrast and seasonal interest. The species provides essential habitat and food, supporting Birds, Butterflies, Deer, Moths, Nectar Insects, and Small Mammals. Thriving in caliche, clay, dry, limestone, and sand, Huisache demonstrates outstanding hardiness once established. It requires minimal supplemental water and adapts seamlessly to drought conditions. It features minimal deer resistance.
