Huisache

Celebrated for its regional ecological value, Huisache (Vachellia farnesiana) is a deciduous Texas tree native across the Chihuahuan Deserts, East Central Texas Plains, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Southern Texas Plains, Texas Blackland Prairies, and Western Gulf Coastal Plain. It features distinctive green to gray-green foliage. During Spring, the plant produces delightfully fragrant, orange, yellow blooms. After blooming, it produces green, brown, black 3-8 cm. It provides essential nectar, shelter, or forage for native wildlife, including Birds, Butterflies, Deer, Moths, Nectar Insects, and Small Mammals. Best suited to caliche, clay, dry, limestone, and sand, Huisache adapts seamlessly to local soil conditions. It requires minimal supplemental water and tolerates dry spells with ease. It offers minimal deer resistance.
